On April 22nd 2018, the world will come together to celebrate Earth Day, an annual event that supports and promotes environmental awareness. The first ever Earth Day in 1970 is widely regarded as the origin of the modern environmental movement, and now over 195 countries and 1 billion people participate in Earth Day initiatives every year. Here at the Huntingdon Manor Hotel, we love being green and are committed to protecting the earth around us. All week, we are celebrating Earth Day with eco-conscious activities and invite you to join us! Community Clean-Up Power HourOn Thursday April 19, we are cleaning up the neighbourhood. David Foster Way is a scenic walkway that skirts around Laurel Point, ending at Fisherman’s Wharf Park. This lovely walk beside the water is popular for tourists and locals alike, and it is the perfect location for our Earth Day Power Hour activity. Starting at 3pm on Thursday, you will find Huntingdon Manor Hotel and Pendray Inn & Tea House staff members picking up litter along David Foster Way for one hour. If you would like to sign up and join us, contact us by phone, email, or stop by the front desk. The more the merrier! Make a Pledge to Reduce Your Carbon FootprintThe most recent studies reveal that Canada has one of the largest carbon footprints among developed countries. That means the average Canadian citizen pollutes and consumes energy at an unsustainable rate for our natural resources. That is why we are challenging ourselves as well as you to reduce our personal carbon footprints. Go to www.footprintcalculator.org and evaluate how much energy you consume and think of ways you can be greener. Whether it’s washing your clothes in cold water, car-pooling with a friend, or eliminating plastic bags from your home, every positive change makes a difference. Share your environmental pledge on our social media and join the conversation. Stay With Us and Support Our CoastIf you stay with us this weekend, you are directly supporting the delicate ecosystems of coastal British Columbia. In honour of Earth Day, the Huntingdon Manor will be donating 5% of its revenue to the Raincoast Conservation Foundation. Raincoast is a non-profit organization that works with scientists and local communities to collect peer-reviewed research on our local waters, wildlife and environment. The organization operates its own field station on Denny Island, BC and uses its own 70-foot research vessel for coastal studies. Now is the perfect time to book a getaway this weekend, so you can support the conservation of British Columbia’s wildlife! Book directly through our reservations line for 24/7 service. Happy Earth Day everyone! Stay updated on the hotel’s current green initiatives by visiting our website. By working together, we can help preserve the livelihood of our beloved planet we call home.
